eSIM QR Code Won’t Scan? Fix QR and Activation Code Errors

By Sergio Soares Published September 7, 2026 17 min read

An eSIM QR code that won’t scan can mean several different things. Your phone may be unable to read the image, it may scan the code but reject the activation details, or the eSIM profile may already be installed even though the phone says the code is no longer valid.

Match the message or behaviour on your phone to the troubleshooting steps below before trying the code again.

Quick eSIM QR Code Troubleshooting

If the QR code will not scan at all, use the correct Add eSIM screen, improve the image or display conditions, or use another installation method supplied by the provider. If it scans but says invalid, expired, already used or already downloaded, check whether the profile is already installed before requesting replacement activation details.

What Does Your eSIM QR Code Problem Look Like?

Use the exact symptom on your phone to choose the right troubleshooting path.

Before You Try Scanning Again

Work through these checks before changing advanced settings:

  1. Look for the eSIM under Cellular, Mobile Data, SIM Manager or SIMs.
  2. Write down or capture the exact error message without exposing the QR code.
  3. Confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is not locked to another carrier.
  4. Connect to a usable internet connection if the provider requires one to download the profile.
  5. Open the dedicated Add eSIM process instead of relying only on a general QR scanner.
  6. Display the original code at a readable size without cropping, compression or glare.

When the Add eSIM option is missing entirely, the problem is more likely related to the phone model, regional variant, software or carrier eligibility. Use the eSIM Compatibility Checker before treating the QR code as defective.

Important to Note:

Deleting an eSIM does not reset its QR code. Some providers can issue replacement activation details, some allow a self-serve restore, and others do not permit the profile to be downloaded again. Confirm the provider’s rule before removing anything.

What to Do When the eSIM QR Code Won’t Scan

A code that cannot be visually recognized is different from one that scans and returns an error. If no notification or message appears, start with the image and scanning process.

Open the Correct eSIM Installation Screen

Follow the phone’s normal eSIM setup process:

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Use QR Code
  • Samsung Galaxy: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM > Scan QR Code
  • Google Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM
  • Motorola: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or SIMs & mobile network, then choose the option to add or download an eSIM

Menu names can differ by model, carrier and software version. Choose the closest matching Add eSIM, Download SIM or Set Up eSIM option.

Improve the QR Code Image

When the scanner opens but cannot recognize the code:

  • display the original code instead of a compressed screenshot
  • increase the brightness on the screen showing the code
  • remove glare and reflections
  • keep the entire QR code inside the frame
  • move the phone slightly closer or farther away
  • clean the camera lens
  • try displaying the code on a laptop, tablet or another phone
  • print the code clearly if a second screen is unavailable

Avoid editing the QR image, adding filters or cropping away its blank border. Those changes can make a valid code harder to read.

Pressing and holding an eSIM QR code on the same iPhone to reveal the Add eSIM option in iOS 17.4 or later.

Installing From a QR Code on the Same iPhone

Apple’s eSIM setup instructions confirm that an iPhone running iOS 17.4 or later may be able to install an eSIM directly from a QR code received in a supported default email app or browser.

Press and hold the QR code. Select Add eSIM if that option appears, then follow the prompts.

If the option does not appear, open the code on another screen or use the manual activation details, carrier link or provider app when supplied.

Android behaviour varies by phone and software version. Some devices let you select a saved image from the eSIM setup screen, while others require another screen or a manual installation method.

Make Sure It Is an eSIM Activation Code

A standard website, payment or account-login QR code will not install an eSIM. Only the code issued for that specific eSIM order or mobile line should be used.

If scanning opens an ordinary website instead of starting cellular setup, you probably have the wrong code. Return to the provider’s installation email, account or app and locate the QR code issued for the eSIM.

QR Code Scans but the eSIM Cannot Be Added

Once the phone reads the QR image, the camera and image are no longer the primary issue. Now you need to determine whether the activation credentials were rejected or the profile has already been delivered.

Look in the phone’s SIM settings first. If no profile appears, record the exact error and ask the carrier or provider whether the credentials are expired, consumed, cancelled or assigned to another device.

A profile that appears in SIM settings but does not finish activating is no longer primarily a QR-code problem. Continue with what to do when eSIM activation fails in Canada instead.

eSIM QR Code Already Used Errors

If the phone says the QR code was already used, the activation credentials probably reached the provisioning system during this or an earlier installation attempt.

Look for the eSIM on the current phone before asking for another code. If it is not there, the profile may have been downloaded during an interrupted setup or installed on another device.

A carrier or provider can check which device received the profile and determine whether the activation details need to be reset, replaced or reassigned.

“Profile Already Downloaded” eSIM Errors

This message means the provisioning system believes the profile has already been delivered.

Before requesting another QR code, review the eSIMs installed on the phone. The profile may be turned off, stored under a generic label such as Secondary or Travel, or listed without a visible phone number. It may also have reached a previous device.

If neither device contains the profile, ask the provider to check its assignment and delivery status.

eSIM QR Code Expiry and Activation Windows

Not every eSIM QR code follows the same expiry rule.

Depending on the issuer, the activation details may have:

  • a deadline based on the purchase date
  • a validity period beginning when the code is issued
  • one successful download without a calendar expiry
  • installation restricted to one device
  • plan validity that begins separately from installation
  • no expiry before the first successful download

Service-plan validity, installed-profile lifetime and QR-code validity are separate parts of the service and may not share the same date.

Check the order email, provider account or official instructions for the unused-code validity period.

Reusing an eSIM QR Code

You cannot assume an eSIM QR code will work a second time. Some carriers let you restore or transfer an eSIM, while others issue new activation details after the original code has been used.

Keeping a copy of the QR image does not mean the credentials inside it are still valid. Depending on the issuer, recovery may use the original details, a newly generated code, an account-based process or an on-device transfer.

The saved image can help identify the order or follow the issuer’s instructions, but it does not guarantee another download.

eSIM QR Codes Used on Another Phone

Scanning the original QR code on a new phone does not automatically transfer the eSIM.

Moving the service may require an eligible device-to-device transfer, account reassignment, a carrier app or replacement activation details. Follow the process supported by the carrier or provider instead of assuming the original code will work again.

For the complete phone-change process, use How to Switch eSIM Between Devices in Canada.

Installing an eSIM Without a QR Code

Several alternatives may be available, depending on the carrier, provider and phone.

Manual Activation Details

Some issuers provide an SM-DP+ address and activation code, along with a confirmation code when required.

Manual entry bypasses the QR image and camera, but it cannot restore credentials that have expired, been consumed, cancelled or assigned incorrectly.

Carrier or Provider App

Some carriers and travel-eSIM providers let you begin installation through their app. Sign in using the account associated with the mobile line or eSIM order and look for an Install, Activate, Add eSIM or Change SIM option.

Finding the original installation details in an app does not necessarily make them reusable or allow unlimited downloads.

Carrier Link or Direct Installation

A carrier may send an activation link or assign the eSIM directly to the phone. On supported devices, tapping the link or accepting the carrier notification starts installation without photographing a QR code.

Device-to-Device Transfer

Supported carriers and phones may offer an on-device transfer that moves the service without the original activation code. That process transfers the eSIM; it does not reuse the old QR code.

Replacement eSIM QR code shown beside an existing installed eSIM profile to explain when new activation details may be needed.

When Do You Actually Need a Replacement QR Code?

Replacement activation details are more likely after deleting a downloaded profile, installing the eSIM on the wrong phone, exceeding the activation window or trying to use credentials limited to one device.

A replacement may also be necessary when the carrier has cancelled the original credentials or its system shows a completed download even though no profile appears on the phone. In either case, support must determine whether the existing code can be reset or new activation details are required.

Replacement details may not be necessary when:

  • an installed profile is simply turned off
  • activation is still processing
  • the image is unreadable but the credentials remain unused
  • valid manual installation details are available
  • setup can be completed through an app, account or on-device transfer

What matters is whether the activation credentials remain usable, not whether you still have a copy of the QR image.

eSIM QR Code Not Working on iPhone

Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data and see whether the eSIM already appears. If it is absent, tap Add eSIM > Use QR Code.

On iOS 17.4 or later, you can also press and hold a QR code received in a supported default email app or browser and look for Add eSIM. If the credentials are rejected or assigned incorrectly, give the carrier the exact error, phone number, IMEI and EID.

eSIM QR Code Not Working on Samsung Galaxy

Go to:

Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM

Depending on the model, Samsung may let you scan a QR code, enter an activation code supplied by the carrier or transfer a SIM from another supported phone. Available options vary by Galaxy model, software version, region and carrier.

eSIM QR Code Not Working on Google Pixel

Open:

Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM

Look under SIMs for an existing profile and confirm that the carrier assigned the eSIM to the phone. When Transfer SIM from another device is available and supported by the carrier, use that pathway instead of attempting to reuse the original QR code.

eSIM QR Code Not Working on Motorola

Menu wording differs between Motorola models, but recent compatible phones generally place eSIM setup under:

Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or SIMs & mobile network

Choose the option to download or set up an eSIM. Some models support manual activation, but only with details supplied by the provider. If no eSIM setup option appears, check the exact Motorola model and regional version.

Canadian Carrier QR Code Differences

Canadian carriers do not all use the same activation, restoration or transfer process.

Bell

Bell’s official eSIM guidance covers automatic setup, QR installation and manual activation details. After an eSIM has been successfully set up, its Bell QR code may not work again. Before retrying the code, see whether the line appears and can place a call.

Rogers

Rogers supports device-based setup, digital QR codes, MyRogers, rogers.com, eSIM vouchers and eligible eSIM transfers. If the original installation method fails, use the current Activate eSIM or Change SIM process in the account rather than assuming an older voucher remains reusable.

TELUS

TELUS activation options can vary by account, device and current self-serve support. Assign the appropriate eSIM through the TELUS eSIM support or current TELUS instructions instead of assuming an older voucher can activate a replacement phone.

Freedom Mobile

Freedom provides QR details through My Account and supports on-device eSIM transfer on eligible phones. Its QR codes are restricted to one phone, while restoration or another QR may be available through the account under Freedom’s current limits. Account eligibility and current policy may apply to additional or replacement codes.

Travel eSIM QR Code Differences

Travel eSIMs may have stricter one-device, one-download and reinstallation rules than Canadian carrier plans.

Some providers offer direct app installation, manual activation details or support-assisted recovery. Others do not allow a deleted profile to be downloaded again or transferred to another phone.

Review the plan’s installation and reinstallation rules before removing or moving the profile. Once the eSIM is installed, signal or mobile-data problems belong under eSIM Connected but No Internet instead.

When Not to Delete the eSIM

Do not delete a profile merely because:

  • its QR code now says it was used
  • the eSIM is turned off
  • the phone has signal but no internet
  • activation is taking longer than expected
  • the line has not connected before arrival
  • another SIM is selected for mobile data
  • the provider asked you to restart the phone

For an installed eSIM with signal but no usable data, follow eSIM Connected but No Internet instead.

If removal is confirmed as necessary, review How to Remove or Delete an eSIM in Canada and verify the restoration process first.

When to Contact the Carrier or eSIM Provider

Contact support when:

  • scanning succeeds but the code is rejected as invalid, expired or already used
  • no profile appears even though the system reports a completed download
  • installation happened on the wrong device
  • a deleted eSIM cannot be restored with the original code
  • manual entry rejects details supplied by the provider
  • the account requires a new SIM assignment
  • an eligible transfer cannot be completed
  • setup still fails on a compatible, unlocked phone

Have these details ready:

  • exact phone model
  • operating-system version
  • current country
  • carrier or provider name
  • order number or mobile number
  • exact error message
  • whether the profile appears in SIM settings
  • whether the code was previously scanned
  • whether another device was involved
  • IMEI or EID if the carrier requests it

Never send the QR image, activation code, password or account PIN through an unverified public channel.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIM QR Code Problems

How Do I Scan an eSIM QR Code If It Is on the Same Phone?

Supported iPhones running iOS 17.4 or later may let you install directly from a QR code displayed in a supported default email app or browser. Press and hold the code and select Add eSIM if that option appears.

If Add eSIM is unavailable, display the code on a laptop, tablet or another phone, or use manual activation details, an activation link or the provider’s app. Android support varies by manufacturer and software version. Some devices let you select a saved QR image from the eSIM setup screen, while others require a second screen or another installation method.

Can an eSIM QR Code Be Reused More Than Once?

Whether a code can be reused depends on how the carrier or provider issued the underlying activation credentials. The QR image may remain in an email or account after those credentials have been consumed.

One provider may allow only one successful download, while another may generate replacement details or provide restoration through an account, app or transfer process. Saving the image does not guarantee that it can install the eSIM again.

What Does “Profile Already Downloaded” Mean on an eSIM?

The provisioning system believes the eSIM profile has already been delivered. It may be installed but disabled, listed under a generic label such as Secondary or Travel, stored without a visible phone number, or present on another or previous device.

Review every installed SIM and eSIM profile before requesting a replacement. If the profile is absent from both the current and previous phone, the provider may need to check its assignment and delivery status.

Do eSIM QR Codes Expire If They Are Not Activated Right Away?

Expiry is determined by the issuer. Unused codes from some providers have an installation deadline, while others have no calendar expiry before the first successful download.

QR-code validity is separate from a one-download restriction, activation window, plan-validity period and the lifetime of an installed profile. A code can remain unexpired but stop working after its credentials have been consumed, while a plan can expire even though the profile remains installed.

How Can I Install an eSIM If the QR Code Will Not Scan?

Available alternatives may include manual SM-DP+ and activation details, a carrier or provider app, an activation link, direct carrier assignment or an eligible device-to-device transfer.

Manual entry bypasses the visual scanning step, but it does not bypass invalid, expired, consumed or incorrectly assigned activation credentials. Enter only the details supplied for that specific eSIM rather than an SM-DP+ address found in an unrelated guide.

What Happens If I Delete an eSIM and Try to Use the Same QR Code Again?

Deleting the profile does not reset its activation credentials. The original code may be rejected, the provider may issue replacement details, the account may offer a restoration process, or the service may need to be transferred or reassigned.

Recovery may not be possible after deleting certain travel-eSIM profiles. If the eSIM has already been removed, use the eSIM reinstallation and reactivation guide to identify the appropriate recovery path.

Can I Use the Same eSIM QR Code on Another Phone?

The original QR code is not automatically an eSIM transfer method. Moving the service may require a supported device-to-device transfer, an account-based SIM change, new activation credentials, carrier reassignment or a replacement QR code.

Follow the process offered by the carrier or provider for that line. How to Switch eSIM Between Devices in Canada covers the complete phone-change process.

Do I Need Wi-Fi or Internet to Scan and Install an eSIM QR Code?

Visual recognition of the QR image does not require internet access. The camera can read the pattern without connecting to a network.

Downloading and provisioning the eSIM profile normally requires an internet connection through the setup method supported by the carrier or provider. Depending on the phone and issuer, that connection may be Wi-Fi, mobile data from another line or another supported path.

What Does “Activation Code No Longer Valid” Mean on an eSIM?

A “no longer valid” message can mean the credentials were already used, the profile was partially or fully downloaded, the activation window expired, the issuer replaced or cancelled the details, or the profile is assigned differently than expected.

Look for the eSIM in the phone’s SIM settings and avoid repeatedly rescanning the code. If the profile is absent and the credentials remain rejected, contact the issuer. A profile that is present but does not complete activation belongs in the eSIM activation-failure guide.

Troubleshoot Other eSIM Problems

Final Thoughts

When an eSIM QR code will not scan, the first thing I look at is whether the phone cannot read the image or whether it reads the code and rejects the activation details. That distinction tells you where the problem is and prevents you from repeatedly scanning a code the phone has already accepted.

If the eSIM appears in your SIM settings, leave it installed. The QR code has already done its job, so the next step is to troubleshoot activation or connectivity.

If no profile appears and the code is expired, already used or assigned to another device, contact the carrier or provider. They can check what happened to the original credentials and reset, reassign or replace them when necessary.
