Spain has plenty of travel eSIM choices, but the best eSIM for Spain depends on how you are travelling. A week in Barcelona has different requirements from three weeks moving between cities, and a Spain-only holiday is a different buying decision from continuing into Portugal, France or Italy.
I spent three weeks travelling in Spain in spring 2026 and used Airalo, Holafly, Orange Travel and Vodafone Travel during the trip. Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia form the main public testing story in this guide, while my broader Spain testing provides additional context behind the representative performance figures.
My route took me from Barcelona Sants to Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes by high-speed train in roughly three hours, then from Madrid to Valencia in about two hours, before returning from Valencia Joaquín Sorolla to Barcelona Sants in around three and a half hours. I used the eSIMs as part of that real multi-city itinerary, although I was not continuously speed-testing all four services throughout every rail journey.
For a straightforward fixed-data Spain eSIM, Airalo is a strong place to start. Holafly suits people who prefer unlimited phone data. Orange Travel stands apart when conventional calls and SMS matter, while Vodafone Travel produced the strongest representative Download result in my testing.
My Picks for the Best eSIM for Spain From Canada
Airalo: a strong fixed-data choice for most Spain trips, with flexible plan sizes and solid performance in my testing.
Holafly: best for travellers who want unlimited phone data and would rather not keep track of a fixed allowance.
Orange Travel: the better fit if you want conventional calls and SMS as well as mobile data.
Vodafone Travel: the strongest performer in my Spain testing at 155 Mbps Download, and a good choice for heavier data use.
All four were fast enough for normal travel use. The better choice comes down to how much data you need, whether you plan to use hotspot, whether calls and SMS matter, and whether your trip continues beyond Spain.
My Spain eSIM Test Results
I tested all four providers during the same three-week Spain trip. Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia are the main cities emphasized here, but the representative figures come from my broader approved Spain testing evidence rather than a mathematical average calculated only from those three cities.
Performance varied between locations, so I use one representative middle-ground Download result from the recorded range for each provider. These numbers are not Spain-wide averages, guaranteed speeds or predictions of what another phone will achieve.
Network congestion, signal strength, device support, local network selection and 4G or 5G availability can all change the result.

Vodafone Travel recorded the highest representative Download figure, followed closely by Airalo. Orange Travel and Holafly were lower, but all four were easily fast enough in my testing for maps, messaging, browsing, social media, video calls and streaming.
That is why I would not rank these eSIMs by speed alone. Once performance reaches this level, data allowance, hotspot rules, calls and SMS, regional coverage and price become much more important.
Which Spain eSIM Should You Choose?
The four services are easier to separate by travel style than by raw speed.

Airalo eSIM for Spain
Airalo is the most conventional all-round choice in this four-provider comparison.
Its Spain lineup includes fixed-data and unlimited options, so a short city break and a longer holiday do not have to use the same buying model. Airalo currently identifies Orange as the primary network for its Spain eSIM.
During my broader Spain testing, I also recorded connections through Yoigo and Vodafone. That describes what happened during my trip, not a permanent list of every network an Airalo Spain plan may use.

Once speeds are comfortably above what maps, messaging, browsing and video calls require, I care more about whether the allowance fits the trip. Airalo works particularly well here because moderate users can buy a fixed amount instead of paying for unlimited service they may never need.
Its unlimited Spain packages come with a fair-use condition. Airalo currently provides a daily high-speed allowance before reducing speeds for the remainder of that 24-hour period.
For many Canadian travellers spending a week or two in Spain, the fixed-data packages are therefore easier to evaluate on value.
Airalo also sells regional Europe plans. If Spain is only one stop, compare the country plan with the regional alternative before paying.

Who Should Choose Airalo for Spain?
Airalo is especially practical for:

- fixed-data budgeting
- one- or two-week Spain holidays
- travellers who want both local and regional plan choices
- people who prefer a familiar app-based travel eSIM service
It is less compelling when conventional mobile calling or SMS is a priority. Orange Travel or local Spanish prepaid service is better suited to that requirement.
Holafly eSIM for Spain
Holafly removes one of the most common travel-eSIM decisions: how many gigabytes to buy.
Its Spain travel eSIM centres on unlimited phone data for a chosen number of days. That is the main reason to pick Holafly over Airalo, not raw speed.
My representative Holafly result is 113 Mbps Download. It ranks fourth in this particular performance comparison, but that figure was still comfortably fast for normal travel use.
Holafly currently lists Orange, Movistar, Vodafone España and Yoigo among the networks available for its Spain product. I personally observed Movistar and Vodafone during my testing.
The bigger limitation is hotspot use.
Holafly’s Spain travel eSIM currently allows up to 1 GB of hotspot sharing per day. Unlimited phone data therefore does not mean unlimited laptop tethering.
That distinction matters for remote work, families sharing one connection or anyone planning to use a laptop extensively from trains, hotels or apartments.
Holafly is also data-only for the short-trip Spain product. WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage and other internet services continue to work over the data connection, but you do not receive a conventional Spanish mobile line for normal calls and SMS.
Holafly in the Canary Islands
I also used Holafly in the Canary Islands on a separate trip to Spain.
Those island results are separate from the representative mainland Spain performance comparison above, but they provide useful first-hand context for travellers heading to Tenerife, Gran Canaria or another Canary Island.

Orange Travel eSIM for Spain
Orange Travel has the clearest reason to exist in this shortlist if mobile data alone is not enough.
My representative Spain result is 124 Mbps Download, and I observed Orange España during testing.
Orange Travel currently lists access to Orange, Movistar, Telefónica, Vodafone and Yoigo on its Spain product page, with 4G and 5G service where available.
The more important distinction is its product structure.
Selected Orange Travel packages combine data, conventional calls and SMS. That gives it an advantage over the data-only travel products when you expect to make ordinary calls or send regular texts while in Spain.
A calling-enabled travel eSIM still should not be treated automatically as a Spanish local mobile line. If a specific Spanish phone number is essential for banking, business, reservations or verification, check the exact package details or consider local prepaid service.
Orange Travel also offers regional Europe options, making it relevant for itineraries that continue beyond Spain.

Who Should Choose Orange Travel for Spain?
Orange Travel deserves extra attention when:
- normal calls or SMS matter
- a data-only eSIM is too limiting
- hotspot support is important
- Spain is part of a wider European itinerary
- access to several listed Spanish networks appeals to you
If the goal is simply inexpensive data for Maps, WhatsApp and browsing, Airalo or Vodafone Travel is usually a cleaner comparison.
Vodafone Travel eSIM for Spain
Vodafone Travel produced the strongest representative Download result in my Spain testing at 155 Mbps.
I observed Vodafone España during the trip.
Its Spain travel products are data-only and 5G-ready, with both fixed allowances and unlimited-style options. That combination makes Vodafone Travel particularly relevant for heavier data use.
The unlimited plan needs one important qualification: it currently provides 5 GB of high-speed data per day, after which service continues at speeds of up to 5 Mbps.
That may still be perfectly usable for messaging, maps, browsing and ordinary video, but it is different from unlimited full-speed 5G all day.
Heavy hotspot users should therefore compare the high-speed allowance with a large fixed-data package rather than making the decision from the word “unlimited.”
Vodafone Travel also sells regional products for wider European travel, so it becomes more useful when Spain is one part of a multi-country itinerary.

Spain-Only eSIM or Europe eSIM?
A Spain-only eSIM is the simplest starting point when almost the entire itinerary stays within Spain.
Regional Europe plans become more attractive when the same phone needs to keep working after a border crossing.
Spain and Portugal
Spain and Portugal are an obvious combination, but a Europe eSIM is not automatically cheaper than two country plans.
The strongest advantage is often convenience. One regional profile can stay selected while you move from Spain into Portugal without installing another eSIM or managing a second balance.

Spain and France
A similar calculation applies to Barcelona plus southern France or a longer rail itinerary north.
A regional eSIM reduces the need to switch profiles at the border, while separate country plans may still win on price or data allowance.

Once Spain is one stop among several European countries, I normally start with a regional product.

There is no universal country-count rule. Compare the actual regional allowance with the country plans that match your itinerary.
Which Spanish Mobile Networks Did These eSIMs Use?
Spain’s major mobile-network brands include Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and networks associated with the MasOrange group.
A travel eSIM does not build its own Spanish radio network. It connects through local network partners.
These are the networks I observed during my own testing:

Those observations should not be read as complete or permanent provider network lists.
Official partner arrangements may include other networks, and the network your phone selects can vary by product, location and roaming agreement.
In Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, all four services gave me usable mobile data. The underlying network becomes more important once an itinerary leaves dense urban areas.
Mountain roads, smaller villages, rural rail sections and remote beaches may behave very differently from central Madrid or Barcelona. No travel eSIM can provide coverage where its underlying local network has no usable signal.
Using an eSIM Beyond Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia
Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia give this guide a useful three-city travel frame, but they do not represent every part of Spain.
My broader trip also reinforces why offline preparation remains worthwhile.
I travelled Barcelona → Madrid → Valencia → Barcelona by train, but I did not conduct continuous controlled testing of all four providers across every rail leg. The city results therefore should not be interpreted as proof of uninterrupted service on Spanish high-speed trains.
Before an intercity journey, I keep essential information available offline:
- map areas
- accommodation addresses
- rail tickets
- reservation details
- boarding information
- emergency contacts
That precaution matters even with a good eSIM because tunnels, rural stretches, congestion and network changes may temporarily affect service.
Canary and Balearic Islands
Island coverage is worth checking at the exact-plan level.
On a separate trip to Spain, I tested Airalo, Holafly, Orange Travel and Vodafone Travel in the Canary Islands. Those results are separate from the representative mainland Spain performance comparison used earlier in this guide.
Vodafone Travel performed best in my Canary Islands testing at 140 Mbps Download, followed by Orange Travel at 120 Mbps, Airalo at 110 Mbps and Holafly at 90 Mbps.
Holafly explicitly includes the Canary Islands in its Spain product, and Vodafone Travel currently lists both the Canary and Balearic Islands as part of its Spain coverage.
That makes these Spain eSIMs relevant for destinations such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria, while destinations such as Mallorca and Ibiza should still be checked at the exact-plan level.
Verify the plan before purchase rather than assuming every Spain or Europe eSIM treats all Spanish islands identically.
When a Spanish Prepaid SIM or eSIM Is Better
Short-stay visitors often prefer a travel eSIM because it can be arranged before leaving Canada.
A local Spanish SIM card or prepaid eSIM becomes much more interesting for a longer stay.
Vodafone Spain currently sells prepaid service in eSIM form. Its Prepago S package was €10 for 28 days with 90 GB of 5G data and a mobile number when checked.
Orange Spain also offers prepaid eSIM service. Its Prepago 10 option was €10 for 28 days with 80 GB and conventional national calling.
Those allowances show why a Spanish prepaid SIM or eSIM deserves serious consideration for longer visits.
Travel eSIM
Better suited to:
- short holidays
- buying before departure
- data-first use
- keeping your Canadian SIM installed
- avoiding a local mobile account
Spanish prepaid service
More attractive for:
- stays of several weeks or months
- very high data use
- a Spanish phone number
- conventional calls and SMS
- travellers comfortable registering for local service
For a typical vacation, the convenience of an international travel eSIM is usually worth paying for.
For a longer stay, student term, working visit or repeated local calling, Spanish prepaid service may provide considerably more value.
Spain eSIM vs Canadian Roaming
A travel eSIM often costs less than traditional daily roaming, but current Canadian carrier travel passes make the comparison more nuanced.
Rogers, Bell and TELUS all sell European roaming options that let customers continue using their Canadian number and eligible home-plan features in Spain.

TELUS is particularly competitive for a two-week or month-long trip. Paying C$50 for 14 days may be reasonable when keeping your regular Canadian number, calls and texts working normally matters more than minimizing the data cost.
Rogers and Bell remain more expensive than many travel eSIMs, but their passes remove much of the setup decision.
Daily international roaming is less attractive for longer stays. Rogers and TELUS currently charge C$18 per day under their standard international daily-roaming arrangements when an applicable pass is not being used.
Freedom takes a different approach. Some plans include Roam Beyond coverage in more than 120 destinations, while 30-day passes are available for other eligible customers.
The practical choice comes down to what you value most:
Travel eSIM: lower-cost data and tighter control over travel spending.
Canadian roaming: maximum simplicity and normal use of your Canadian line.
Hybrid setup: travel eSIM for data while keeping the Canadian line available for texts, calls or verification.

Keep Your Canadian Number While Using a Spain eSIM
A Dual SIM phone lets the Spain eSIM handle mobile data while the Canadian line remains installed.
My preferred setup is:
- Spain eSIM: mobile-data line
- Canadian SIM/eSIM: remains available for the regular number
- Canadian data roaming: off
- automatic mobile-data switching: off
- travel-line roaming: enabled where the eSIM provider requires it
The goal is to prevent the phone from silently moving data back to the Canadian line.
Keeping that line active may help with incoming SMS and verification messages, although no travel setup can guarantee that every bank or sender will deliver verification codes abroad.
Calls and outgoing SMS through the Canadian line may also trigger roaming charges depending on the carrier and plan.
WhatsApp is simpler. Your account can remain registered to the Canadian number while the Spain eSIM supplies the internet connection.

How Much Data Do You Need for Spain?
The right allowance depends more on video, hotspot use and trip length than on navigation or messaging.
3 to 5 GB
A light user may manage this on a short trip with:
- Google Maps
- restaurant and attraction searches
- occasional social media
Around 10 GB
Ten gigabytes is a comfortable starting point for many one- or two-week Spain trips.
It leaves room for frequent maps, photo uploads, social media and occasional video calls without constantly checking the remaining balance.
20 GB or more
Look at 20 GB or a larger package for:
- frequent streaming
- video uploads
- regular video meetings
- laptop tethering
- remote work
- stays of several weeks
Unlimited data
Unlimited service is useful when usage is difficult to predict, but the fair-use rules matter.
Holafly offers unlimited phone data while limiting hotspot sharing on its Spain travel eSIM to 1 GB per day.
Airalo unlimited packages include a daily high-speed allowance before reduced-speed service applies.
Vodafone Travel currently provides 5 GB of high-speed data per day on its unlimited Spain product before continuing at up to 5 Mbps.
The word unlimited therefore does not answer every buying question. Check both the high-speed allowance and tethering rules.
Set Up Your Spain eSIM Before Leaving Canada
Installing the eSIM at home is usually easier than troubleshooting it after landing.
That does not necessarily mean starting the plan early. Installation and activation rules vary by provider.
Before departure:
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
- Buy the correct Spain or Europe plan.
- Install the profile using the provider app, QR code or manual details.
- Give the line a clear label such as Spain Travel.
- Keep the Canadian line as your normal voice line if you need the number.
- Select the Spain eSIM for mobile data at the appropriate time.
- Turn off data roaming on the Canadian line.
- Disable automatic mobile-data switching.
- Save the provider’s setup instructions offline.
After landing, enable the travel line according to the provider’s instructions and let the phone register on a supported Spanish network.

For a trip covering both Spain and Portugal, I would compare a regional Europe eSIM with the two country-specific plans before buying.
The regional product is often simpler because one eSIM can remain active after crossing the border. A Spain-only plan may still offer better value if most of the trip is in Spain, so the best choice depends on the current allowance, price and how much time you are spending in each country.
Can tourists buy a prepaid eSIM from Vodafone Spain or Orange Spain?
Tourists can use prepaid service from both Vodafone Spain and Orange Spain, subject to the provider’s normal signup and identification requirements.
Vodafone currently offers prepaid plans directly as eSIMs, including service with a Spanish number, mobile data and calls. Orange also offers its prepaid range in eSIM format and specifically states that visitors who are not Spanish residents can use prepaid service.
A local prepaid eSIM is especially worth considering for a longer stay or when you need a Spanish phone number.
Do I need data roaming turned on for an eSIM in Spain?
Many travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled on the travel eSIM line because they connect through roaming agreements with Spanish networks.
That does not mean turning roaming on for your Canadian line. Keep Canadian data roaming off, select the Spain eSIM for mobile data and follow the travel provider’s setup instructions for its own line.
Is an eSIM cheaper than Rogers, Bell or TELUS roaming in Spain?
A travel eSIM is often cheaper for mobile data, especially compared with paying a Canadian carrier’s daily international roaming rate for a longer trip.
Current European travel passes narrow that difference. TELUS, for example, currently offers 14-day and 30-day Europe passes that may be reasonable when keeping your Canadian number, calls and texts working normally is worth paying more for.
The right comparison is therefore not simply eSIM price versus roaming price. Convenience and normal use of your Canadian line also have value.
Can I keep my Canadian number and WhatsApp while using a Spain eSIM?
A Dual SIM phone can use the Spain eSIM for mobile data while your Canadian SIM or eSIM remains installed for its regular number.
WhatsApp can stay registered to your Canadian number even though the internet connection comes from the Spain eSIM. Keep data roaming off on the Canadian line and disable automatic mobile-data switching to reduce the risk of accidental roaming charges.
Should I install my eSIM before travelling to Spain?
Installing it before departure is usually the safest approach because you still have reliable Wi-Fi and time to solve setup problems.

Longer stays change it again. Vodafone Spain and Orange Spain prepaid service can provide far more local data and a Spanish mobile line for relatively little money.
